Pete Basinger

Pete Basinger is delighted to join the Colorado Timberline Academy community as the ceramics and 3D art instructor, where he brings a dynamic blend of creativity, experience, and a deep love for the outdoors. With over 15 years of experience in both traditional classroom settings and outdoor education, Pete is committed to fostering an environment where students can grow through hands-on, experiential learning. His teaching philosophy centers around the belief that artistic expression is a powerful tool for self-discovery, confidence-building, and connection with the world around us.
A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Pete was shaped by the rhythms of life in the north—spending his formative years cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and exploring the backcountry. That deep-rooted appreciation for nature continues to guide him today. Now calling Durango home, he finds joy and inspiration biking through Colorado’s rugged high country, always seeking new trails, new perspectives, and new moments of awe.
Pete holds degrees in both history and education, and he is especially passionate about integrating art with storytelling, culture, and environmental awareness. Whether guiding students at the pottery wheel or sculpting with natural materials, he encourages them to experiment freely, embrace imperfection, and take creative risks.
Above all, Pete is excited to be part of a community that values curiosity, craftsmanship, and connection. He looks forward to supporting students as they explore their artistic potential and deepen their relationship with the land, themselves, and each other.
